Whale sharks can reach lengths of over 11 meters and scientists believe that the maximum size could be up to 20 meters,
however, despite their size, whale sharks are gentle giants, filter feeding on plankton, small fish and the occasional squid.
Recent studies reveal that whale sharks are great ocean travelers undertaking seasonal migrations through the Caribbean and the warmer waters of the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans, although scientists are as yet unable to say whether the migrations are tied to the changing location of food sources or to breeding habits. Due to a combination of ocean currents and the upwelling of colder waters, the waters around Holbox are rich in marine life, and perhaps this attracts the whale sharks to the area. According to scientists, the island has the largest concentration of whale sharks in the world.Located on the Gulf coast of northern Quintana Roo, Holbox is part of the Yum Balam nature reserve and its coastal lagoons and wetlands are rich in wildlife. Visitors often see dolphins, herons, ibis, white and brown pelicans and flocks of flamingos.

This day trip is only available in July and August for groups of up to 10 people. A minimum of six people is required for the tour and a bilingual biologist or naturalist guide will accompany the group at all times.

Los tiburones ballena pueden alcanzar envergaduras de hasta 11 metros, y los científicos creen que pueden llegar a los 20. Sin embargo, a pesar de su tamaño, los tiburones ballena son amables gigantes que se alimentan de plancton, pequeños peces y algún calamar ocasional.
Estudios recientes indican que son grandes viajeros marinos que realizan migraciones estacionales por el Caribe y las aguas más tibias de los oceanos Atlántico, Índico y Pacífico, sin embargo no ha sido posible determinar si dicha migración obedece al cambio de sitios de alimentación o hábitos de crianza. Debido a la combinación de corrientes oceánicas y la afluencia de aguas más frías, el área que rodea Holbox es rica en vida marina y quizás sea eso lo que atraiga a los tiburones ballena a esta zona, la cual tiene la concentración más grande de estos animales en el mundo, según lo aseguran algunos científicos.
Holbox se localiza en la costa norte de Quintana Roo, en el Golfo de México, y es parte de la Reserva Natural de Yum Balam. Sus lagunas costeras y humedales tienen una gran variedad de vida silvestre. Los visitantes pueden eventualmente observar también delfines, garzas, íbices, pelícanos y flamingos.
